My first semester as a Journalism Major

Since middle school, writing has always been something that has come easy to me. My imagination ran wild when it came to producing stories. I loved writing about my future and what I saw for my self. Ever since middle school, I was always involved in either the newspaper club or a journalism club, I was just always surrounded by writers. Since high school, I knew I wanted to make this my profession, or something related to writing or just simply working in the media profession. During my senior year of high school, I was an intern at a company called D11 Sports. I would interview different high school players from my school and build highlight videos. Now, as a freshman at Montclair state majoring in journalism, trying to fully determine what I want to do for the rest of my life, has been a struggle. My academic goals here at Montclair state are to graduate in 4 years with my bachelor's in journalism. Trying to attain a 3.5 or higher GPA it is clear, high school was nothing compared to college. Having much more time for assignments, my life for some reason has sped up. Having classes every day and working, trying to find time for handing in my assignments has been a task I was not mentally prepared for. Trying to build my personal brand, Is another goal I am working towards. Being able to build something that is visually appealing to my employers is quite important. I wish to start a blog or a page where I speak about matters that are interesting to society.

Some of my passion would have to be writing. Writing has always been a way for me to verbalize myself when I find myself at a loss for words. I normally write in my notes about my feelings or how my days have been recently, and I go back and reflect from where I was then, to where I am now. My passion is educating those and myself more on things that actually matter in society, I don’t engage myself in social media drama or celebrity news because to me, things like that aren't important. Issues that are important to me are situations going on in the black community or injustice in general. In a perfect world, I’d want to have a large social media platform that I can speak my views about BLM and important issues going on in society. The two tie in with each other because I can see this goal being accomplished. Writing and talking about social issues is attainable.

In ten to fifteen years from now, my dream job would have to be working in either a journalism or Public relations field. I’d like to fight for or have a voice for those that feel like they do not. Now, I am in school to earn my degree and I want to even get my master's in creative writing. I want to be able to know how to write properly and even be able to help my peers or clients in ways such as those. I hope next semester to join the Montclairion, to further my wiring skills, and to get closer to my goal as a writer. A piece of media I’ve created this semester was a speech that I wrote about Hair discrimination for my speech class. This speech was something I am proud of because, in 2020, hair discrimination in the black community is still an everyday issue. I enjoyed educating my peers on the topic because they all seemed engaged and interested in what I had to say.

The term GRIT to me describes how determined someone is to accomplish what they want in life. I do see myself as someone who is determined as passionate about my future, I am also human. I get tired and lack the motivation to continue and do what I need to get done. Understand and know I need to accomplish these goals, I take time away for myself for an hour or two, and then continue what It is I need to get done. To get to where I need to be, I want to intern with a writing company called “lehighvalleylive” near me and write for them. while doing this I’d learn many things from this company and hopefully become a writer for them as well.
